As with everything academic, you need to know exactly, precisely what your argument is; your argument is the point, the reason for your work, and you can write only when you know what you want to say.
Your dissertation is not a book, it is not an interesting discussion, it is an argument to demonstrate your ability to produce valuable research within the strictures of your field. A doctoral study is a period of learning how to be an academic, and that means learning the ropes!
Everything that you say, every word, every sentence, needs to be directly related to the question which you are answering; there is no room for digression, for wandering off.
You can write only when you know what has been written before. If you do not research thoroughly you can lose months of work, when you discover that someone, or many people, have already argued your point. Writing begins with reading.
A doctorate is about learning to write, and the only way to learn to write is by writing, every day. By producing work every day, even very little, you are refining your writing, and moving toward your goal. Leaving the writing until the end can be giving yourself an overwhelming burden.
Make sure you are working towards targets. This gives your writing direction, and prevents you from wasting time writing paragraphs or chapters that will not be used in the final piece.
You have to edit and re-edit, and re-re-edit continually. There will never come a point where your writing is perfect, and the best you can do is to conscientiously edit your work over and over and to ensure that you read it from as objective a standpoint as possible.
Sometimes editing is not enough; you make a new discovery, and this changes the context, and suddenly a whole chapter is now incorrect. Delete it revise it, but never try to make it work when you know it does not. Deleting and revising is gruelling, but it is essential.
