A quality research paper that could win scholarships or gain university admission with its astute argument and clever words is not going to just fall out of the sky and land in your lap. There is a lot of work to be done, and it needs to be done well to be convincing. If there are only 5 hours left in which to write your paper, hopefully you have done at least a little background work.
In a race against the clock, here is what to do to get your paper written in only 5 hours. Make sure there are no distractions that could steal even one minute of your time.
Gather all your resources together that you have hopefully been collecting. This includes notes, books, ideas, everything. If you don’t yet have a research statement, quickly write one down and place it in a spot on the table in front of you in clear view. You will be referring to this often, as you build up evidence for your answer to this question (your argument.)
This is a good time for speed reading and skimming. Use pieces of paper to mark sections of the books that have relevant information so you can come back to them quickly when typing your essay.
If there are gaps in your research or you find that you have insufficient evidence to back up your argument, then get in front of your computer and search diligently to garner enough source material to fill in the gaps. Keep a tab open for each important source you are going to use. Use no more than 30 minutes doing this.
For the final 30 minutes of the second hour, jot down your main ideas. These main ideas will become chapter headings or subheadings. All of your gathered research materials should fall into one of these headings. Now, looking at your research statement and your main headings, construct your opening paragraph.
Start typing. Type as fast as you can without letting your fingers fall off. You will be taking all the sources you found in step 1 and step 2 and using the information and evidence to support your argument. You need to sound solid and credible in your stance. Do not be tempted to plagiarize to save time. You will be discovered and it won’t be worth the risk.
Keep typing. You probably don’t have enough evidence yet to sufficiently back up your claim. Get more content typed. And then get even more content typed.
Proofread and revise. That’s all there is to it. Get this paper sounding perfect.
There! You finished the research paper in 5 hours. There’s no guarantees it will win any awards but at least it’s done.
